We Won!
WE WON.
Today, we celebrate something bigger than a campaign.
I am honored and deeply humbled to officially become the Democratic Nominee for Hays County Commissioner, Precinct 4.
First and foremost, I want to thank God. I also want to thank each and every one of the incredible women and men who stood beside me in this journey. I truly could not have done this without you. What we built together is something special. We became an army of mostly women; diverse in age, culture, and background; united across our clubs, our neighborhoods, and our communities. Women from every walk of life came together with one shared purpose: to lift each other up and serve our community.
Together we inspired people who had never been involved in politics before. Some voted in a primary for the very first time. Some had never participated in a Democratic primary before. Many simply wanted to be part of something hopeful, something rooted in people helping people. For the past two months we block-walked tirelessly. Nearly every day we were out there knocking doors, talking to neighbors, listening to stories, hearing concerns, and building trust. This truly became a campaign of the people, by the people, and for the people. It was neighbors helping neighbors.
And through it all, we became united.
This campaign brought together people of different races, cultures, faiths, and backgrounds, and that unity is something I will continue to protect and nurture. We will keep inspiring people from every race and creed to participate in shaping our future together.
To my core team; you know who you are, the work you poured into this campaign will stay in my heart forever. From the very beginning you believed in this mission and trusted me with your time, your energy, and your votes.
To my rocks Judith, Susan, Moira, Gracie, Emily, Nike, Lynn, Bob, Leyla, Terri, Amantha, Kelley, Debbie, Melanie S., Melanie E., Kathy, Monica, Maria S., Maria M., Gabriel, Linda, Amy, Jan, Mary Beth, Cat, Natalie, Darcy, Darlene, Shea, Violeta, Ana, Jaime, Mary, Lucia, Francisco, Julie, Penny, Jennifer, Sarah, Sylvia, to my family, to my daughters, husband, and to my mom who stood in the sun right beside us; every sacrifice mattered.
From block walking street after street, learning people’s names, listening to their concerns, taking notes about what they hoped to see improved in their neighborhoods; we built something real. Something human. At the polls we stood for 13+ hours and mostly under the sun. My team leads and team kept reminding me to drink water and take breaks, but I kept saying: I can’t sit down when I’m here to connect with people.
I shook hands all day. I hugged. I listened. I talked with neighbors about why this race matters and why our community deserves strong leadership.
By the end of the night my feet were so swollen I couldn’t take my cowboy boots off; I had to have Jan pry them off for me. But every step was worth it.
Because this victory belongs to ALL OF US.
I have always said I want to be a commissioner who represents everyone; someone who will never leave anyone behind and who will serve every corner of Precinct 4. That commitment will never change. I carry the voices of our community with me; from the street/rural level to the policy table. I will continue sitting down with residents, listening to your concerns, and working together toward solutions. Because the only way we succeed is together.
Together we can restore strong values, work across differences, and focus on the things that unite us; protecting our water, safeguarding our natural resources, and ensuring a healthy future for our children.
Water and our natural resources are not red or blue issues. They are the lifeline of our community.
Finally, I want to thank my primary opponent for stepping forward and running a respectful campaign. It takes courage and sacrifice to put yourself out there, and I respect the effort she and her team put into this race.
The Unger campaign was run with integrity, respect, and heart . . . and I’m very proud of that.
Today we celebrate.
Tomorrow, we move forward.
The journey continues.
Sincerely,
Angie Unger
